about

_And Then Not Even Then_ is The Laureates’ third LP and the follow-up to their 2011 album _Spells_. In the intervening six years the men have experienced near-death, childbirth, mortgages, two new members and apparently even fit in some songwriting and recording in their basement studio. While it took a while to complete, this is no triple-LP rock opera/concept monstrosity. This group of songs does, however, continue in the tradition of the band's previous records, combining a love of both the classic pop sounds of the 60s/70s and the sturm and drang of noisy post-punk and indie rock, leaning decidedly more toward the latter at times here. Opener “Youthy, Natural” imagines what Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd would sound like jamming with Sonic Youth, while “Stereo Man” borrows the treble-fuzz of The Jesus and Mary Chain to dress up a pop song about loving pop songs. “Let’s Merge” throws a swirling noise pulse into the middle of a 90s-indebted indie pop tune before a Wire-y coda brings it home. Meanwhile, “House of Wives”, “Toys” and “Creatures” conjure the same magic the band has worked hard to cast since they started. The album closes with acoustic guitar on the hushed and wryly plaintive “Don’t Want to Dance”, which as the name suggests, politely asks that you please not dance to it.
